We Empower

In continuation of our series about the Libraries' Guiding Principles, let's reflect on empowerment.

Our colleague Britt Lariviere shared the following about feeling empowered:

"My boss Gretchen and the library leadership have empowered me to make decisions in growing and developing The Basement. I have a lot of experience in the field of video games, and I appreciate the trust that has been given to me to make The Basement successful. I’m most proud of the great work that my student employees have done. They provide unique experiences through our events, the workshops they host, and the vibrant environment they have created. My student employee’s fingerprints are all over the space, creating a really unique and fun area for the campus to enjoy."

I noticed that Britt draws attention to two different types of empowerment. The empowerment he feels from those above him in the Libraries, and also the empowerment he affords to his student workers.

Reflect on the following:

What could your supervisor provide you with to make you feel more empowered? Some examples might be time to study professional materials, so you feel more confident in your role or the opportunity to lead an upcoming project.

What can you do for those who report to you or your coworkers to help the rest of the Libraries feel empowered?

Use these thoughts to prompt conversations with your colleagues about empowerment.
